Synthesis of the session on “La dimensione e gli indicatori del benessere”
Increasing attention, both in Europe and worldwide, is devoted towards indicators for measuring well-being “beyond GDP”: OECD, Eurostat and Istat proposed frameworks for well-being measuring by defining indicators for the chosen domains (in Italy: 130 indicators, a record within Europe). There is also an increasing request from the stakeholders for understanding what happens in real life (MPI, SDGs) and the need to understanding the effects of the policies on well-being indicators is increasing.
The process of constructing indicators is important: it can be improved both via new methodological tools and new data sources. Well-being indicators are important when defining and monitoring policies (Italy is the first country in Europe, and among the G7 to introduce 12 equitable and sustainable well-being indicators ( BES: Benessere equo e sostenibile) in the yearly governmental economic and financial planning document (DEF: Documento di economia e finanza).
In the session, the main features of the MAKSWELLproject (MAKing Sustainable Development and WELL-Being Frameworks Work for Policy Analysis) have been illustrated. The project joins academy and National Statistical Offices, for improving the production process of indicators and implementation of policy analyses.
