Founded in 1971, the University of Bremen currently has 19 040 students and 2 254 academic staff. Some of the ground-breaking educational concepts implemented in the University’s early days - which came to be known as the Bremer Modell - have since become established features of modern university education all over Germany. These include: interdisciplinary study and research, research-based teaching projects, orientation to practice, and responsibility towards society. These have been supplemented since with new aims like internationalisation, opportunities for junior scientists and scholars in structured post-graduate programmes, gender equality, and an added sense of purpose as a ‘learning institution’. The University of Bremen has been successful in the German ‘Excellence Initiative’ in 2012 and is supported by this funding, which identifies Germany’s best universities. Moreover, Bremen is also in the top ten universities in the acquisition of third party funding. The team working on the ECDP is part of the Institute Labour and Economy (IAW) which has 34 research staff. The IAW is responsible for a wide range of research (mainly in the fields of sociology and economics), regionally, nationally and internationally. The IAW actively engages in delivery of scientific policy advice.
